SEXUAL ABUSE COUNSELLING

The experience of sexual abuse can have far reaching effects on a person's life, sense of identity and well-being. The trauma associated with abuse may impact a person's life for ever and feelings that lay dormant can resurface, particularly at times of stress or vulnerability. The experience of abuse can result in feelings of worthlessness and reduced self-esteem, feelings of guilt, responsibility for what occurred and a sense of stigma around being a victim of abuse. These emotions can in turn be detrimental to our lives and relationships well beyond the time of the trauma occurring, while the coping mechanisms that people use such as alcohol abuse or gambling to hide from these feelings can further exacerbate this hurt and destruction.

Life Supports counsellors, based in Balwyn, Melbourne, support our clients in working through their experience of sexual abuse in order to reduce its ongoing impact on their life.

We assist our clients to make sense of their memories and work to change their relationship with those memories. As such, memories that were once so powerful cease to trigger such intense emotions and no longer get in the way of a full and meaningful life. The counselling process will support our clients to understand and work through their feelings constructively, such that they will gain a greater sense of control over their emotions, their responses and their life moving forward.
